December 2011 marks half a century since the first edition
of Romances de Grisú, work of the Aller author
Jesús Castañón Díaz, the son
and grandson of miners, who dedicated most of his life to
teaching and journalism and who excelled in the literary
sphere as a poet.
This
classic work of literature can be found not only in the
libraries of Spain, such as the Real Academia Española
or Biblioteca Nacional de España,
but can also be located internationally in the Swedish Library,
the Bristih Library, the Biblioteca Nacional de Argentina,
the Library of the United States Congress - in the edition
corresponding to Tres Trilogías - and the
Instituto Cervantes of New York both in the independent
edition and in that included in Tres Trilogías.
Romances
de grisú has been published in various editions
over time. The first was printed in Madrid, in Gráficas
Anzo in 1961 and includes illustrations by Francisco Bernalte.
The second is supported by the Aller Council, and includes
a prologue by Joaquín de Entrambasaguas and illustrations
by Francisco Bernalte, Benigno Hevia and Alfredo González.
It adds new romances, incorporates sections on vocabulary,
proper names and toponymy and was published in Madrid by
Gráficas Anzo in 1962. The third was included in
the anthology Tres Trilogías published by
the Council of Palencia in 1976 and it contains illustrations
by Brosio and José Damián Simal, the image
of a coalmine taken by Foto Esteban and a prologue by Fernando
Lázaro Carreter, director of the Spanish Royal Academy
from 1990 to 1998. The fourth formed part of the volume
Crónica de una cuenca, a work published by
the savings bank Caja de Ahorros de Asturias in Oviedo in
1987, which includes the author's mining poetry and the
novel El tercer relevo and incorporates illustrations
by Alfredo González and a photograph of coalmines
taken by Foto Esteban, of Moreda de Aller.
In
the prologue to the second edition, in 1962, the literary
critic, essayist and writer Joaquín de Entrambasaguas
considered the work to be an example of social poetry that
stressed the vital force, sensitivity and optimism of the
miner's work and emphasised the reflection of daily work
and typical vocabulary in a permanent contrast between the
violence of the dynamite and the gentleness of the Asturian
landscape. In the third edition, included in the book Tres
Trilogías, Fernando Lázaro Carreter saw
the coalfield as a space where men extract coal to turn
it into bread and he highlights the scenes of grief and
the circling flight of death, the destroyed heroes, the
weeping, the explosions and the short and popular poems
that penetrate the soul.
Its
appearance was greeted by numerous press reviews. Between
1961 and 2009, comments on the work have been included in
daily newspapers of Asturias, Barcelona, Leon, Navarra,
Palencia, Valencia and Valladolid; in weekly newspapers
of Asturias, magazines of Buenos Aires, in Asturian and
Catalonian mining publications, digital union publications
and in cultural magazines published in Madrid. Foremost
among many others are those published by La Estafeta Literaria,
Poesía Española and Revista de Literatura
and those written by the Cervantes prize-winner Francisco
Umbral, the director of the Prince of Asturias Foundation
Graciano García, the official chronicler of Oviedo
Manuel Avello, the newspaper editors Antonio Álamo
Salazar, Orlando Sanz and Ricardo Vázquez Prada and
the writers Víctor Alperi, Luciano Castañón
and Mauro Muñiz.
It
was also included in bibliographical catalogues from 1961
to 1968, published by the Spanish National Research Council
(CSIC), the Ministry of Education, the Instituto Nacional
del Libro Español and the Spanish Institute of the
University of Utrecht, and the work appears in three leading
dictionaries of literature and other reference works, between
1969 and 2003: Quién es quién en las letras
españolas, Diccionario bibliográfico
de poesía española del siglo XX by Ángel
Pariente, Diccionario Espasa literatura española
by Jesús Bregante and the Gran Enciclopedia
Asturiana and the Apéndice de la Gran Enciclopedia
Asturiana.
It
is a route along which the histories of literature of a
general nature quote Romances de grisú in
works that describe the production of Asturias, Palencia
and Valladolid, as well as in global histories of contemporary
Spanish literature of the twentieth century, such as that
produced by Ángel Valbuena Prat. And it is also referenced
in quotations, reviews and studies published in the Spanish
magazines Cuadernos bibliográficos, Poesía
Española and Revista de Literatura, as well as in
the United States publication Books Abroad and in other
works on Aller and Asturias. It is a labour in which it
is appropriate to emphasise the comments of the Cervantes
Prize winner and member of the Spanish Royal Academy, José
García Nieto, and Gerald E. Wade, professor of the
University of Tennessee.
And,
naturally, Romances de grisú has been quoted
and commented on in numerous histories of mining literature
between 1991 and 2009, from the studies published in the
newspaper La Voz de Asturias during the period it was edited
by Faustino F. Álvarez to the reflections of the
different editions of the Encuentro de Escritores de
la Mina organised by Grupo Coleccionista Minero. Thus,
the members of the the Real Instituto de Estudios Asturianos
Víctor Alperi and Celso Peyroux, the professor Benigno
Delmiro Coto, the journalist José Antonio González
Fernández, the writer Albino Suárez…
have highlighted the poem "Canto al Nalón",
the poetic language of the work, its significance within
post-war mining literature and they have conducted an analysis
of its elements together with those of the novel El tercer
relevo.
This
work of Jesús Castañón has been the
object of study in university research work in Canada and
Spain. Thus, La visión poética de Jesús
Castañón, directed by Jaime Asensio at
The University of Western Ontario, London, and Literatura
y minas en la España de los siglos XIX y XX,
directed by José Carlos Mainer at the University
of Zaragoza, analyse elements of the work to deal with themes
of rebelliousness and social protest and they emphasise
the agility of style, its rhythm and its concentrated expression
of intense emotions via the use of dynamism, the colours
black and red, vibration and the development of all the
elements of the mining world moving towards the fatal destiny
of death.
Romances
de grisú forms part of the collective imagery
of Asturian mining in its zeal for the conservation of industrial
heritage and its memory in specialised museums. Its contribution
is recognised in the setting up of two centres. First, in
the Ecomuseo of Samuño which will be hosted by Pozo
San Luis in La Nueva and for which permission was requested
from the legal heirs in 2009 to reproduce verses of this
work on vinyl on a horizontal wall panel with dimensions
of two by two metres for the Interpretation Centre of the
Protected Landscape of the Coalfields. And second, it is
quoted in the bibliographic inventory of authors in the
synopsis for the blueprint of the Centro de Documentación
y Estudios Literarios de la Minería Europea that
will be based in La Foz de Morcín. This organisation,
which will be supported among others by the Instituto Cervantes,
will document the artistic recreation of mining in the European
Union via an extensive compilation of literary texts of
all kinds of genres.
Romances
de grisú forma parte del imaginario colectivo
de la minería asturiana en su afán por la
conservación del patrimonio industrial y su memoria
en museos especializados. Se reconoce su aportación
en la puesta en marcha de dos centros. Primero, en el Ecomuseo
de Samuño que acogerá el Pozo San Luis en
La Nueva y para cuyo Centro de Interpretación del
Paisaje Protegido de las Cuencas Mineras, se solicitó
en 2009 a los herederos legales permiso para reproducir
versos de esta obra en un vinilo de corte sobre un panelado
en paramento horizontal con dimensiones de dos por dos metros.
Y segundo, figura citado en el inventario bibliográfico
de autores de la sinopsis del anteproyecto del Centro de
Documentación y Estudios Literarios de la Minería
Europea que tendrá su sede en La Foz de Morcín.
Esta entidad, que cuenta entre otros con el apoyo del Instituto
Cervantes, documentará la recreación artística
de la minería en la Unión Europea mediante
una extensa compilación de textos literarios de todo
tipo de géneros.
In
addition, the last two verses of the first stanza of Romances
de grisú -"Yo también llevo carbón/
y dinamita en las venas"- adorn the glass windows of
the side facades and the main auditorium of Moreda Aller.
Epilogue
Fifty years later, in the glow of light from our ancestors'
miners' lamps, the verses of the mine light up the memory
and the trajectory of a classic work of its genre.
